Springmoor's Pathways Wellness Center Grand Opening Draws Crowd

After months of preparation and anticipation, Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community in Raleigh, N.C., held the grand opening of the state-of-the-art Pathways Wellness Center on March 25 with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception.

More than 100 people who attended the event were treated to the sight of a variety of new services offered for residents and their guests, including a 25-meter salt water lap pool, new Keiser fitness equipment in an expanded fitness room, hot tub, sauna, movie theater, beauty salon, bistro, massage therapy rooms, movement room for fitness and wellness classes, and gaming tables.

These new amenities promote the various Pathways dimensions of wellness, such as emotional, vocational, nutritional, social, environmental, spiritual, and intellectual, and the community’s leaders look forward to seeing the new center used for a variety of purposes, and to help improve everyone’s quality of life at the tree-shaded community.

“Wellness used to be treadmills,” Springmoor Chief Executive Officer David Ammons has said. “Wellness still—in many people’s minds—is getting people on machines to track their progress and help them get in shape. For me, wellness is also allowing a grandfather to visit with his grandson over a movie and popcorn in the comfort of his community—that’s wellness if his life is improved because he gets to spend quality time with his family.”

The grand opening reflected Springmoor’s commitment to wellness; after speeches by Ammons and Springmoor’s Executive Director Fred Conner, attendees were offered massages, manicures, balance assessments, exercise demos, and blood pressure, glucose, and bone density tests.

Guests also could sample food that Springmoor dining staff prepared to demonstrate the nutritional and health commitment of the Pathways program, including layered Greek dip, fresh fruit skewers, fruit salsa, shrimp cocktail, cheese and crackers, beef tenderloin sliders and petite key lime dessert parfaits.

The new center will allow Springmoor to increase the number of aquatics classes offered--focusing on balance and strength--and add more group sessions in the exercise room. The community is looking to finalize a one-on-one policy that would enable fitness instructors to work “one-on-one” with residents to assess their fitness and work with them on a plan for improved wellness. The new area will allow Springmoor to expand its work with its rehab department, to help people transition to the wellness center to maintain whatever strength they gained through rehabilitative therapy.
