Active Aging Week®, which
is being held Sunday, September 22 through Saturday, September 28, 2013, is a
national observance organized by the International Council on Active Aging® to
highlight the diverse opportunities available to older adults. The 2013 theme is
“Discover your community,” and encourages older adults and the organizations
that serve them to focus on wellness.
At Springmoor Life CareRetirement Community, the Pathways Wellness Directors have planned an exciting
week for the community. Some of the highlights include a “Discover your community” scavenger hunt,
free smoothies, an evening celebration dance, resident storytelling, Encore
Program for Lifelong Enrichment at North Carolina State, tour of the Lego
exhibit and an array of exercise classes!
A popular wellness event
at Springmoor is the Annual Health & Wellness Fair. This event will not
only take place during Active Aging Week®, but will also promote Fall Prevention
Awareness Day—another initiative of the National Council on Aging. This year’s
theme, Preventing Falls—One Step at a Time, seeks to unite professionals, older
adults, caregivers and family members to play a part in raising awareness and
preventing falls in the older adult population.
The exciting day will
include a balance class led by Springmoor Physical Therapy and Tai Chi
demonstrations. The Health & Wellness Fair will host more than a dozen
vendors that provide the Springmoor community with educational information,
giveaways and free services or screenings, including blood pressure checks,
bone density screenings, balance testing and medication reviews, to name a few.
Every week is active aging
week at Springmoor. It is our goal to use the national observance as a
celebration for those who are doing their best to stay active, and to motivate
or encourage others to discover their inner athlete, and nurture their bodies!
